Just wondering, is Google Home app supposed to show Bond devices controls (i.e. Up/Down)?
It only shows the devices, when I click on the device - config page.
So I can’t control the Bond devices there. Only with voice?
We used to get this all the time about the Ceiling Fan controls, until Google finally implemented CF controls from the app. We asked them repeatedly about it, but it’s unclear what effect our badgering had on their priorities.
Here’s how it works: we provide a manifest to Google Home with all the capabilities of the various devices that we make available to them. Then it’s up to Google how to make it work via voice and their app.
It’s not so much a choice of Google that it will not work in their app, they simply haven’t spent the resources to make the shades controllable from inside the app. I think they assumed that people would use voice with the voice assistants, not realizing that their app actually has a lot of potential for bringing all the devices in the home into one place.
This is always irritating. I’m glad more and more people (like the contributors in this forum) are aware of these shortcomings. Hopefully the big companies will wake up and prioritize more universal feature parity.
I’m new and not sure if this is where to post this question, but here goes.
I operate my patio awing awning with a single channel Somfy. The app has the Up, Down, and My buttons. They all work properly with the app. My Google Assistant, recognizes and properly activates the Up (or open) and Down (or Closed) buttons, but cannot recognize or use the “My” button.
I read a Sept '19 post that mentioned using the “OK Google set (device) to my favorite position” should work but didn’t. How do I get Google to recognize the “My” button. It’s the position I want most often and I hate having to dig my phone out or find the remote.
Has this been resolved. I purchased this Bond device because the Amazon description said it integrated shades w/ GOogle Home. But looks like that isn’t accurate. Do I need to return this device?
I don’t personally have shades, but multiple threads seem to say that shades DO work with Google Home through Bond, though Google occasionally changes phrasing required to operate certain functions and/or people have varying experiences with certain phrases.
As in, some time ago people saying “Ok Google, set {device} to my favorite position” were getting better results with “Ok Google, set {device} to preset”.
Bond, and other smart home device manufacturers, are at the mercy of Google and Amazon for those Assistant and Alexa integrations.
If you have a more custom set-up with programmatic integrations, you can shoehorn more things into place at times, but then you’re in the same pickle of relying on the choices of Google and Amazon.
Thanks for the reply. The issues is not the Voice command. I can’t get Google Home to realize the blinds have any controls. The Bond app has open, close, and stop events. But when I sync Google Home with the Bond account, the Bond devices appear with gears just like the original post here. And when I select a blind, it has none of those events. Only change the name and assign to a home. I can’t control the blinds from Google Home.
Try controlling with your voice. Google is way behind on their visual user interface in the app (they don’t have a visual speed control for fans for example), but it works pretty well via voice. Just say “Hey Google, open MY SHADE” or “close MY SHADE” where you replace MY SHADE with the name you’ve given the shade on Bond or GoogleHome if you’ve changed the name there.
Hey, that works!! Thanks!! It’s too bad the app controls don’t work so I could use Google Home to open/close the blinds at certain times. But the Bond app does that. Thanks again.
Great! Do let Google know in their feedback that you want to control the shades via their app visually. They do listen to their customers, and Bond users are known as being squeaky wheels
I’d recommend using the “Feedback” option in the Google Home app. Go to Account > Feedback.
Forums are nice because they are publicly visible, but I would like to believe the official Feedback channel will be more closely monitored by Product over there.
I have run into this same problem with a Somfy enabled Awning - voice commands through Assistant work great, through Home app it’s not usable. I worked around it by connecting Bond to Smartthings and Smartthings to Google Home. Works pretty nicely. It’s not a perfect solution, but it works for me until Google can natively make awnings work better.
