How do most people wire a smart fan that uses SBB tech? Technically a wall switch is unnecessary since the fan is controlled from the app or remote. So the fan can be wired with a permanent power connection. What is the common/recommended method?
major upside to hardwiring without the “dumb switch” is that nobody turns it off there, preventing turning on with the app/voice ![]()
Sorry but I don’t understand that. If it’s hardwired “ON” then the app can turn it off or on.
To clarify the existing situation for the installation of a new fan:
- Is this a ceiling location without prior power?
- Will a hardwired outlet be connected to an existing circuit breaker providing power to what other devices in the home/room?
- A remote control should always be available.
In my experience, flexibility in power distribution is a big plus which comes in handy when you have smart devices that may need a hard power-off reset without going to the breaker box.
This is new construction. Sounds like I’ll just have the electrician install a simple on/off switch at the wall.
to state more plainly: i have seen many times installs with smart ceiling fans on wall switches where it creates the frustrating experience of some people using the wall switch to turn off the light, and then you try to use Alexa and it cannot work because the receiver is not powered. better to use an RF wall control of some sort.
That’s a great point. I can simply use one of my Lutron Caseta switches.
Good idea for fan on/off and speed control with a Lutron Caseta switch.
You still have no light control with this setup from the wall unless there is version with this additional function.
Yea, I don’t care. All control will actually be done through Home Assistant.
You may want to consider having the electrician install the fan with 14-3 wire running from the switch box to the fan. In addition to the traditional black line wire, there’s a red wire. Should you ever, in the future, install a fan with light combo you wish to control separately from the wall switches this gives you the option of wiring the fan to one circuit and the light to another. Just an option–and there are lots of ways to wire a fan/light combo–but better to have the wire in place now than wish later you had done so. ![]()
I completely agree! My family room was missing this and I was dependent on a remote or smart automation to handle the light of the new ceiling fan 16ft high mounted.
